Ranch Style Houses

Home sold in Avon Lake, OhioRanch style homes were first built in the 1920’s, but they became exceedingly popular in the United States for the 1920’s until about 1980.  The first ranches were built in California.  They are often associated with tract housing and the suburbs.  They became popular after World War II because they were economical to build and their was a booming housing demand.  Ranches began losing popularity in the 1970s as buyers began gravitating toward more formal, traditional styles of homes.  Builders also began to simplify and go cheap on construction which in turn created an uninteresting product.  Recently there has been a revival in interest.  First time buyers find ranches to be an affordable way into a home in a nice, established community.  Older buyers like the first floor living and the easy navigation.  This trend could very well continue given the aging population.  Ranches are a uniquely American style of architecture, simple and unpretentious in nature.  Even though ranches were originally built in a cookie-cutter style, they are now found in established neighborhoods where homeowners have modernized and given the homes some unique style.

Ranches are known for having these basic features:

  • One story
  • Long, close to the ground profile
  • Minimal decoration on both the exterior and the interior
  • Low pitched roof
  • Rectangular, L-shaped, or U-shaped design
  • Simple, open  floor plans
  • Efficient use of space, few interior walls
  • Big windows
  • Sliding glass doors leading to a patio
  • Attached garage
  • Shutters decorating the windows
  • Exteriors typically built with wood, brick, or stucco
  • Overhanging eaves
  • Cross gabled, side gabled, or hip roof

While most suburbs have some ranches in their housing inventory, if you’re looking to buy a ranch style house around Cleveland, your best bet would be to look in these towns:
