Bungalows are an American housing, but the style actually started in India. They are known for having space-efficient floor plans. The first American bungalow was designed in 1879 by William Gibbons Preston in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The bungalows that we are most familiar with today were inspired by architects from California.

Bungalows reflect several different architectural styles. The word bungalow is often used to refer to any small 20th century home the uses space efficiently. Some of the different flavors for a bunglow include:

  • Low pitched roofs and a horizontal shape
  • Living rooms tend to be at the center
  • Connecting rooms without hallways
  • Efficient floor plans
  • Built-in cabinets, shelves, and window seats
